Paul Franklin

Paul Franklin is a local artist whose work combines a variety of photographic styles. He enjoys
shooting
local scenes,
whether it's spontaneous reportage, the intensity of street photography
or the
measured patience of capturing landscape and wildlife subjects. Unplanned
photography
gives his
work an edge, with rewards in carrying his day camera, ready to shoot unusual sights or
developing
shots with low angles or modified exposures. “You need to do something a bit different”. His kit
is
often a day lens, a telephoto, or a compact system if he needs to be mobile and ‘on-the-fly’. The
image
‘Scullers at Dawn’ started out as a sound cutting through the fog, oar striking water, and as the
scullers
emerged,
Paul seized the opportunity and took the shot. Isleworth’s diversity provides a glut of imagery
and
narrative, and Paul uses this fully. “Within one mile of the town, there are modern tower blocks and
old town houses and the local’s favourite, the river bank,” says Paul. This was photographed recently
showing people pre-occupied in the sunlight as the Royal Barge approached in the distance. Paul’s
influences are unexpected - sports played a big part until he couldn’t participate in them. However,
some
past research during his training have been influential such as studying photographers Garry
Winogrand and Ansel Adams. On a personal level, photography ‘mobilizes’ Paul,
and
stimulates
his
regular day. He is central to the group - a wide spectrum of people who learn from one another as
they
develop their photographic skills.
